Janus Antenna successfully integrated with an Airbus MRTT aircraft

We reflect back on 2019, where Airbus demonstrated a complex scenario simulating multi-Mbit/s, wideband communication links between ground forces operatives, a fighter jet, a MRTT, and a combined air operations center (CAOC) on the ground.

The MRTT aircraft, the new generation tanker

Airbus A330 MRTT is the most capable new-generation tanker, combat-proven and with unique multi-role capabilities. It can assure 3 missions in one: refueling, transporting and deploying.

With more than 125,000 flight hours, the MRRT is the benchmark for multi-role tankers.

The A330 MRTT has been ordered by Australia, France, NATO, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and the UK, with 60 total aircraft sales as of March 2020.

The Janus Antenna on board of the MRTT

The MRTT was fitted with an end-to-end solution that incorporated Airbus Italy’s revolutionary ‘Janus’ SatCom antenna system capable of transitioning between Ku, Ka and Mil-Ka frequency bands; the Proteus frequency hopping military modem; and the Aero Links Integrated Management System (ALIMS) Communications Manager.

The lightweight, durable (ARINC-791) Janus Antenna solution ensured seamless connectivity throughout the demonstration, and customers were able to experience this technology live. Customers who attended the demo witnessed firsthand the Airbus knowhow, expertise and commitment to fulfill future battlefield requirements which we continue to work towards and support.
